The Department of Defense (DoD) has more than 2 billion square feet of buildings under management and they have ordered military bases across the armed services to shift 25% of their electricity supply to renewable energy by 2025. According to a Government Accountability Office (GAO):

- 44 trucks and 220,000 gallons of fuel were lost due to attacks or other events while delivering fuel to Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan in June 2008 alone
- The fully burdened cost of getting fuel to bases can exceed $400/gallon
